Material
Electron-cross-linked, not chemically
The moment you step on it, something pushes back: the finer the cells, the faster the rebound, and the more a sit-down fall is spread out.
XPE is chemically cross-linked; iXPE is electron-cross-linked, using an electron beam to bond the molecular chains, giving finer, more even cells and more stable density. At the same thickness it rebounds faster and is less likely to sag in one spot over years of use.
Cut it open and it is a honeycomb. Tens of thousands of tiny, uniform closed cells sit side by side, propping each other up like a honeycomb: when a child falls, the impact is spread across a whole field of cells instead of pressing into one big hole; lift off, and each cell springs back so the mat is flat again. Ordinary foam has coarse, uneven cells, and over time it sags starting from the biggest ones.
Surface
Water-based PU + stain-resistant antibacterial layer
The surface is water-based polyurethane (water-based PU), not PVC, with a stain-resistant antibacterial finish on top. Milk, urine and fruit purée stay on the surface instead of soaking in, and one wipe cleans it; there is none of the plastic squeak you get from PVC when walking on it.
The surface material was tested by CTI for antibacterial rate under GB/T 31402-2023: over 99.9% against E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, 99.7% against Candida albicans (report A2250617705101C). The test was on the surface material; antibacterial does not mean sterile and does not replace everyday cleaning.
Structure
Five-section seamless top
Crumbs, grains of rice, dried milk: their favourite hiding place is a seam. The top is one piece, with no seams to hide in.
The fold lines are on the back, so it lies flat when opened. One wipe can go from one end to the other without stopping or picking at anything.

10,000+ ventilation holes along the sides
The new version has rows of ventilation holes along the sides so air can circulate inside the mat and moisture has somewhere to go; the difference is most noticeable when it is stored standing against a wall. All the holes are on the sides: the surface you step on and wipe is still one solid piece with no openings, so crumbs cannot fall in and there are no little holes you cannot clean.
Storage
Fold in a second, two ways to use it
When your child is asleep or guests are about to arrive, fold it in half along the back fold line and the play mat becomes a seat with a backrest; if you do not want it in the middle of the living room, stand it against a wall and it fits beside the sofa or the bed.
No rolling, no squashing, no finding somewhere to hide it.

We do not think of the Essential as the lesser one. All four are foams we make ourselves, each suited to different situations, and explaining the difference clearly matters more.

The Essential was submitted for every test except flame resistance, and passed every one. It has no ST mark because EPE would need an added flame retardant to pass, and we chose not to add one. That is a choice, not a limitation.
